What is nephrology?

Nephrology is a branch of internal medicine that specializes in the kidneys, water and mineral metabolism, and acid-base balance in the body. A thorough examination of the kidneys enables the timely detection and treatment of any potential systemic diseases. Kidney disease can be genetic or develop as a result of high blood pressure, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, after a severe infection, or as a side effect of medication. Nephrologists (nephro is the Greek word for kidney) analyse and treat kidney diseases (including kidney stones) using conventional, i.e. non-surgical, methods.
